An EEG is a test that detects abnormalities in your brain waves, or the electrical activity of your brain. The procedure consists of small metal discs with thin wires applied onto your scalp.

To record seizure activity, a longer EEG recording with times that you are both awake and asleep may be needed. Patients are set up at the hospital and are sent home for 48 to 72 hours.

Patients who are more critically ill may require continuous monitoring of their brain waves. Physicians are able to review brain activity at any time during the recording.

EMG and nerve conduction studies are used to help diagnose a variety of muscle and nerve disorders. This test evaluates the integrity of nerves in the arms and legs.
